Welcome to Locke House, a beacon of hope, independence, and community in the heart of Portadown. Named to honor the spirit of John Locke, the renowned philosopher whose ideals of personal freedom and autonomy continue to inspire the values that guide our mission, Locke House stands as a testament to empowerment, care, and a deep respect for individuality.

Locke House was constructed in 2009 as part of a collaboration between Praxis Care and Arbour Housing (formerly South Ulster Housing Association). With its design by HPA Architecture, Locke House integrates traditional architectural elements with contemporary innovation, symbolizing the harmonious balance between history and progress. The building was crafted with sustainability in mind, earning a “Good” Eco Homes rating for its eco-friendly, energy-efficient design. Situated on 132-136 Thomas Street, Locke House blends seamlessly into the vibrant community of Portadown, offering residents a space that is both modern and welcoming, reflecting the inclusive nature of its purpose.

Locke House isn’t just a building—it's a home. With group housing, private ensuite bedrooms, and dispersed supported living options, Locke House provides a supportive environment for individuals with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, and complex care needs. Here, residents receive 24/7 assistance, empowering them to live as independently as possible while fostering their personal growth. In addition to comfortable living spaces, Locke House offers a robust community atmosphere, with bi-weekly social events and monthly activities that help reduce isolation and promote social engagement.

The name Locke House carries more than a historical reference; it serves as a symbol of independence and autonomy, echoing the philosophies of John Locke, the English philosopher whose work laid the foundation for the modern concepts of individual rights, personal freedom, and self-determination. Just as John Locke championed the importance of personal liberty, Locke House is dedicated to providing individuals with the resources, support, and environment they need to thrive in their own independence while being part of a compassionate, caring community.

The Locke name also resonates deeply within the local context. The Locke family has played a prominent role in the history of Portadown, with Alan Locke, a respected businessman and former Mayor of Craigavon, leaving an indelible mark on the community. Alan Locke was deeply involved in local development and social issues, advocating for improved social housing and community welfare. His dedication to the well-being of his neighbors mirrored the core values of Locke House, where care, dignity, and empowerment are at the heart of every service provided.

Alan Locke’s legacy extends beyond business and politics; his lifelong commitment to the people of Portadown reflected a broader ethos of service and compassion—values that we carry forward at Locke House. Alan, who grew up in Thomas Street and worked with the family business Locke Tools and Locke Travel, believed in improving the lives of those around him. Even after his passing in 2024, his legacy of kindness, civic duty, and community-building continues to inspire us at Locke House.

Here at Locke House, we take pride in continuing the Locke family's dedication to community and care. Whether you're here to call it home, volunteer your time, or simply learn more about our services, we invite you to be a part of our ongoing mission to provide safe, supportive housing that fosters independence, promotes personal growth, and connects individuals with the community.

As John Locke once said, “The great and chief end of society, civil society, is the preservation of property,”—and at Locke House, we interpret this not only as the protection of material possessions, but as the protection and nurturing of personal freedoms, dignity, and well-being for all. Whether through the lens of philosophy, community service, or personal empowerment, Locke House stands as a living testament to the ideals of care, inclusion, and opportunity for all.

Welcome to Locke House, where independence, care, and community converge in the spirit of the Locke legacy.
